Ok but imagine the 118 finding out, and they are like, “oh … buddy,” but Buck is just so determined. “He’s coming back, guys. You’ll see.” And the 118 keeps having these loaded stare-offs, and Maddie’s got a spreadsheet of people to check up on Buck, but he’s fine. He’s fine.

Because while everyone’s talking behind his back, convinced that Buck’s once again in over his head with how deep into delusion he gets, Eddie’s FaceTiming Buck every day, “wait you put sugar in the spaghetti sauce??” And Chris has actually started replying to the reels Buck sends him, “lol you watch REELS?”

And Buck’s keeping the dust off Chris’s bedroom furniture and he’s cleaning the Hildy after every use like it’s an expensive sports car, and he doesn’t touch the mug he got for Eddie one Christmas that says ‘Zaddy’ on it which Eddie hated and yet still uses it every morning. “Put that back; that’s Eddie’s mug,” Buck says when Chim tries to stage an intervention, showing up at South Bedford Street like, “Buck, man. You can’t keep doing this.” “Doing what, Chim?” Buck asks, wiping off a bit of creamer he’d spilled on the counter.

And there’s a pool back at the firehouse. Buck knows, because he caught Ravi talking about it. “Put me down for a thousand,” Buck tells him, even though the firehouse limit on betting has always been $100 but, whatever, this man once chased Ravi with a chainsaw, he’s not going to question it.

And when Eddie does, finally, inevitably, come home, driving into that familiar driveway, there’s a light on inside the first place that ever really felt like home to him (to both of them). The light gets brighter when Buck opens the door, apron on, tossing a dish towel over one shoulder. He catches the moment Eddie hesitates. “What are you waiting for?” He asks, smiling. “Come inside. I just finished dinner.”

Right on time.

The 118 thinking that Buck is taking Eddie leaving really well and chalking it up to maturity when, really, it's Abby 2.0 and Buck is secretly living in Eddie's house and in complete denial about the whole situation. I'm here for it.
